Council Term Limits
Current:
The Parish President is limited to three (3) consecutive terms, but there is no limit on the number of terms a Council Member may serve.
Proposed:
Council Members may not seek re-election if they have served for more than 1.5 terms
Discussion:
- District Member may seek At-Large seat and vice-versa
- Promotes fresh faces and ideas on the Council
- Council Members, especially At-Large, have more power in smaller council
- It will be more expensive and difficult to unseat an incumbent with larger districts and At-Large seats
- Voters strongly support term limits
- St. Tammany voters chose to keep 3-term limit for a popular Parish President
